EMBO/EMBL conference on Science and Society: Genetics, Determinism and Human Freedom, 14-15 Nov. 2003

As scientific organisations concerned with establishing a dialogue with the public, the European Molecular Biology Organization and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory announce their fourth international joint conference on science and society.

14 October 2003 - 15 October 2003
Germany
"Genetics, Determinism and Human Freedom" continues this now well established multidisciplinary event, which annually brings together over 200 people - scientists, social scientists, philosophers, science communicators, policy makers, consumer associations and members of the public - in engaging debate. The meeting will take place at the EMBL Operon, Meyerhofstr. 1, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany, from 14-15 November 2003. The conference language is English.
This year the role of genetic information in disease, behaviour and the information society will be discussed with reference to its social impact. ,Four sessions are planned:,* Technological revolutions in genetic information gathering and application ,* Genes and disease; the links and their consequences for human freedom ,* Use and abuse of genetic information in justice, security and the information society ,* Fast forward: human trait modulation,"Genomes'R'us", designer babies and genetic identity cards
The tradition of this conference is to break down the barriers between non-scientists and scientists, promoting mutual interest, understanding, and dialogue on subjects that concern everyone. It is also designed to be forward-looking, and the last session is devoted to a futuristic reflection on what might and might not be possible. The conference is organised for the public, and there is no registration fee.
