A European symposium on safety in the modern society will be held in Helsinki, Finland, from 15 to 17 September 1999. The symposium is organized by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.

The aim of the symposium is to discuss the panorama of safety risks in the modern society, covering a broad range of activities. The discussions will also cover the analysis and management of the risks related to materials and products, from production to consumption. The themes of the symposium will be:

- Safety cultures;
- Safety among different subpopulations;
- Risks and safety in various environments;
- New methods in safety promotion;
- New trends in regulations and applications.

On the basis of the discussions and conclusions drawn during the symposium, recommendations on the most important safety issues will be presented to the European Commission.

The organizers are currently interested in receiving abstracts of papers on the above topics which may be presented at the seminar. Further instructions on the submission of abstracts will be made available in Autumn 1998.
