GIS Planet'98, an international conference and exhibition on Geographic Information, will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 7 to 11 September 1998. The conference is organized by USIG, an NGO created in 1991 to represent the interests of the Portuguese geographic information community and to promote diffusion and awareness of geographical information systems (GIS).

One of the main objectives of the conference is to bring together different levels of government institutions responsible for geographic information (GI) policies and the scientific community. The conference will also serve as a forum for sharing, disseminating and integrating original research and experience in the application of GIS on a global scale.

The topics to be addressed include all the relevant areas of GIS contributions to global sustainability and to life quality improvement. They are divided into three main categories:

- Global thematic areas covering issues of concern at a supranational level and applications that must be approached using international or global geodata sets;
- Technological areas covering state-of-the-art GIS technology and recent developments in information technologies relevant to GI re-engineering;
- Application-oriented areas covering GIS application fields that are benefiting from technology and are of importance for database integration.

The latest developments in GI technology will also be exhibited during the conference by leading software and hardware companies, service providers and consultants.
