The fifth international conference on progress in analytical chemistry in the steel and metals industries will be held in Luxembourg, from 12 to 14 May 1998. It is being organized by the European Commission (DG XII) and the European Committee for the Study and Application of Analytical Work in the Steel Industry (CETAS).

The aim of the conference is to bring together chemists, working in the steel and metals industries, from all over the world, to exchange experiences of the different analytical techniques used in their industries. The conference will cover a wide range of topics including:

- Analysis related to electric furnaces;
- Automated steel analysis;
- Determination of light elements;
- Future analytical methods;
- Standardization of analytical methods;
- The use of information technologies in the analytical library;
- Trace and ultra-trace analysis.
