A seminar on "Perspectives and employment in environmental engineering in Europe" will take place in Hamburg, Germany, from 24 to 26 September 1998. Organized by TU-TECH and the Technical University of Hamburg Harburg, the event is supported by the European Commission, DG XI, as part of its general measures to promote awareness of environmental issues.

The seminar will aim to look at the current situation in relation to training in environmental engineering, and the employment prospects of this sector. It will offer the possibility to present experiences from different countries in the field, as well as to cater for the analysis of examples of environmental engineering programmes in some EU countries. It is hoped that both the potential and limitations of this field can be identified, and guidelines for the preparation of courses can be set down, as a result of the seminar. The event is also expected to increase awareness of some of the most pressing environmental issues and the possibilities for employment in the sector.

The target audience includes government officials in the employment field, academics in the engineering field, engineering graduates and training providers. In addition, firms which offer or use environmental services will also be encouraged to participate. In order to ensure optimum discussion, participation is expected to be limited to around 60, of which a proportion will be young graduates.
