The Baltic sea and its region - environmental challenges and sustainability mobilisation

The Baltic sea has since very long historically connected the countries surrounding the large water body in the northern part of Europe. In more recent days and especially during the last decade the contacts in the region have taken new and innovative forms.

However, the Baltic sea itself is constantly under environmental stress. Thus research issues concerning the development of the marine environment, the fishing possibilities and the more general development challenges of the region are of prime European concern.,In the seminar presentations will be made by Swedish scholars and invited guests who will give a condense overview of some of the key issues.

In the panel contributions will be made by Professor Lars Rydén, Director of the Baltic University Programme, Professor at Uppsala University, Dr. Kaisa Kononen, Coordinator of the ERA-net Bonus (on the Baltic sea), Academy of Finland and Associate Professor Sture Hansson, Stockholm University.
- Summary: Responses to R & D policy issues, related to environment and sustainable development and new forms of collaboration, eg Technology platforms, Professor Uno Svedin.
The seminar will be conducted in the presence of Dr. Pierre Valette, acting Director of Directorate for Environment within the Directorate-General for Research of the European Commission
- Connection between Arts and Science in the Baltic region,Gunilla von Bahr, rector of the Royal College of Music, Stockholm and founder of the Baltic Academy of Music,Concert
After the seminar there will be a concert with musicians from the Swedish Royal College of Music.
Music from the Baltic region,Martin Sturfält, piano, plays an unpublished piece by the famous Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar: Sonata in G Minor. This is followed with music by Sibelius, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky performed by Anders Hjortvall, violin and Carlos Murakami, piano. The music is from the Baltic region and all the artists are or has been PG soloist diploma students at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm.
