The third "Car free cities" conference will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, on 22 and 23 June 1998. The conference will be organized by the Transport Research Institute of Napier University on behalf of the Car Free Cities Network, which was launched by DG XI of the European Commission in 1994. This network now has some 60 members actively involved in sustainable mobility strategies.

Using the city of Edinburgh as a case study, the conference will focus on the following topics in plenary sessions (each of these will be expanded in related workshops):

- Environment, lifestyle and transport;
- Influencing travel behaviour - The political dimension;
- Good practice - major projects;

A number of additional workshops during the conference will focus on the following:

- The economies in transition: Specific problems and solutions;
- Public transport improvement - practical examples;
- Less traffic is good for business - practical examples;
- Promoting health through travel habits.
