First international conference on environmental management systems

The first international conference on environmental management systems will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 4 and 5 June 1998. The conference is organized by a partnership of European research, industrial and academic groups, under the patronage of DG XIII of the European Commission.

The conference will open with addresses from representatives of the EU's INNOVATION programme and of the Austrian government. The event is aimed at executives involved in, or interested in, the development and implementation of environmental management systems.

The overall objective of the conference is to provide an up-to-date overview of recent developments and trends related to environmental management issues. Practical experiences from various industrial sectors will also be presented. The specific aims of the conference include:

- To update participants on significant trends and upcoming experience in industrial environmental management systems and their implementation based on innovative technologies;
- To provide environmental managers with a forum for exchanging ideas and actual experience related to industrial environmental issues;
- To present new concepts, methods, information technology tools and processes in the field of definition and measurement of environmental performance;
- To demonstrate through case studies and workshops how a variety of methods are used to design and implement effective environmental management strategies.
