Course on RODOS-based Decision Support for Off-site Emergency Management in the Early Phase of a Nuclear Accident

The Training Centre (FTU) of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe organises a training course on RODOS-based Decision Support for Off-site Emergency Management in the Early Phase of a Nuclear Accident. The course was developed by the IKET and is held in co-operation with the European Commission, DG Research J4. The event will take place in Karlsruhe from 4 to 8 October 2004.

4 October 2004 - 8 October 2004
Germany
The course deals with the early phase of nuclear accidents and the decisions on sheltering, evacuation, distribution and intake of iodine tablets. Particular attention is payed to accidents where radioactive material is released to the atmosphere. Subjects of lectures and exercises are the assessment of the radiological situation in the early accident stage and the available early countermeasures.
In practice sessions, the participants will discuss selected aspects from the lectures by means of RODOS results covering a representative range of possible accident situations and typical consequences. The RODOS system will be operated by experienced RODOS staff members, therefore participants do not need to have computer skills.
Target groups are involved in emergency management and response using the RODOS system or they are generally involved in radiation protection and want to get trained in an application-oriented way on interventions in the early phase of a nuclear accident.
The following topics will be covered:,- The RODOS system and its role in emergency management and response,- Emergency actions, their benefits and disadvantages,- Exposure pathways and doses with and without emergency actions,- Source terms and accident scenarios,- Atmospheric dispersion and deposition,- Monitoring, data assimilation and uncertainties,- Practice-oriented training with specific scenarios,- Full-day tabletop exercise.
