eTEN proposals postponed / Wi-fi "across the Strait of Gibralter" event

The eTEN proposals for BUS, serverPDF and learnPDF have been postponed. ,Psand are supporting wi-fi "across the Strait of Gibralter" event as part of Transacciones / Fadaiat.,

22 June 2004 - 23 June 2004
Spain
It has not been possible to assess the future three to five years and make sensible proposals for eTEN. The intention was to link web access and PDF server software in support of learning. BUS - breitband und satellit - is a project combining both satellite and wi-fi. serverPDF looks at server software from Adobe and alternatives in PDF or XML. learnPDF looks at how 'collaboration' software can extend the uses of PDF for learning. The output of this project should have been training materials in 2006/7.
The projects have been supported by Exetreme, Acrobat Services and Psand. See http://www.acrobat-services.com/eten(opens in new window). However there has been a major difficulty in predicting the acceptance of the technology, as Adobe server software is currently intended for large organisations. (See PDFzone ,http://www.pdfzone.com/news/1204-PDFzone_news.html). As price levels may vary, it is difficult to predict the time scale of a launch of a product in the future.
At the same time, have European governments begun to develop forms using Reader Extensions. Examples from defra were shown at a recent meeting of the Acrobat User Forum: http://www.acrobat-services.co.uk/auf(opens in new window)
Wi-fi demonstration "across the Strait of Gibralter",Transacciones / Fadaiat is a two-day event that will take place on 22 and 23 June simultaneously in Tarifa (Andalusia, Spain) and Tangiers (Morocco). Psand will provide technology in support of the project, including:
Bi-directional satellite connexion to Tarifa over which live video streams will be sent.
Wireless 802.11b link across the Strait of Gibraltar between Tarifa and Tangiers. This appears to be stretching the known limits of wi-fi. Will Pollard said "I really do hope this works as a technical demonstration. Even if there is some problem the intention is effective as performance art."
Wireless 802.11g link between the Castle of Guzmán el Bueno and the beach in Tarifa.
Local wireless network infrastructure in Tarifa and Tangiers.
Audio and video streaming facilities for the event.
