Fatigue Design 1998 will be held in Espoo, Finland, from 26 to 29 May 1998. The symposium will be the third in a series of international symposia addressing the challenge of ensuring adequate fatigue strength of components and structures at the design stage. The symposium will be co-sponsored by the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS), with funding from the EU.

The theme of this year's symposium will be "reliability". The purpose of the conference is to consider, when analysing the fatigue resistance of a component, factors other than simply the average material properties, estimates of expected usage and pre-selected safety factors. Consideration must also be given to factors such as scatter in material properties, different end-users, manufacturing tolerances and uncertainties in fatigue damage models.

The following topics will be covered during the symposium:

- Reliability in design;
- High cycle fatigue;
- Lightweight connections;
- Spot welds and welds;
- Fatigue of materials;
- Spectrum and thermal loading;
- Multiaxial fatigue;
- Crack propagation;
- Fatigue assessment;
- Component reliability.
