EUA - European University Association Conference "Research Training as a Key to a Europe of Knowledge", Maastricht, The Netherlands, 28-30 October 2004

The conference, hosted by Maastricht University, will focus on the future research training role of universities in Europe.

5 October 2004 - 30 October 2004

The third EUA conference in 2004, examining the social relevance of higher education and research for the development of the knowledge society, will centre on the key role universities need to play in research and development, innovation and knowledge creation and transfer at regional, national, European and international level. This contribution is essential if the ambitious Lisbon and Barcelona objectives and the increasing demands of the global labour market are to be met.
Key issues to be explored in the plenary session and discussion groups include the changing skills and competencies required by researchers in a future labour market, the evolving role of doctoral training and the function of mobility, and the concept of research as an integral part of lifelong learning. Strategies to attract young people into science and research, the provision of new entry routes to research training and career development for researchers, will also be addressed.
Speakers, including Raffaele Liberali, Director, DG Research (Directorate D: The human factor, mobility and Marie Curie activities), European Commission, Jo Ritzen, former Minister of Education, Culture and Science, The Netherlands and author of "Towards a European Knowledge Union", and Yehuda Elkana, Rector of Central European University, Budapest and author of several publications on science and education, will comprise of academics, researchers and research managers from universities, research institutions and major companies, such as Philips, Nokia and Bosch, in order to offer a broad representation of the research community in Europe.
