A second study conference on the Baltic Sea Experiment (BALTEX) will be held in Rügen, Germany, from 25 to 29 May 1998. The conference is organized by the GKSS Research Centre, on behalf of the BALTEX Science Steering Group. The conference will receive funding from various research and government organizations including the EU under the Environment and Climate research programme.

BALTEX was designed to obtain a deeper understanding of the energy and water cycles of the Baltic region and represents the European contribution to the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX), which is permanently guided by the World Climate Research programme. An important objective of BALTEX is to describe the hydrological cycle better in climate models.

The aim of the study conference is to review research results in the field of meteorology, hydrology and oceanography, as related to water and energy cycles of the entire catchment region of the Baltic Sea. Results from the first BALTEX research period (1994-1998) will be presented. The conference also aims to coordinate research efforts in view of the large field experiments scheduled for the years 2000-2001.

During the conference, issues of data collection and applications of space-borne remote sensing tools will be addressed, and techniques for assimilating this data into models will also be presented. In addition, the conference will outline progress made in the understanding of the basic meteorological and hydrological processes driving the energy and water cycles, which aims to improve the physical description of these processes in meso-scale models.

The conference will conclude with a presentation on the latest developments and recent results obtained by coupled hydrological-meteorological models, complemented by regional climatological studies.
