A symposium on marine benthic dynamics will be held in Iraklion, Crete, from 5 to 7 October 1998. The symposium will be organized by the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete under the auspices of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. The symposium will be supported by the European Commission under the Marine, Science and Technology (MAST) and Agriculture and Fisheries (FAIR) research programmes.

The aim of this symposium is to provide a forum for the presentation of the results of recent research into the direct and indirect effects of fisheries on benthic ecosystems. This will be done using ecosystem descriptors such as biodiversity, carrying capacity, assemblage structure and size spectrum, against the background of other perturbations in the environment caused by natural and anthropogenic factors other than fisheries such as pollution, gravel extraction or eutrophication.

It is expected that the symposium will contribute substantially to further development of EU and national policies, with respect to the ecological balance and the overall production potential of the sea.
