Eurasia Online'98, a joint conference involving the countries of Central Asia and the European Union will be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from 7 to 9 October 1998. The conference will be organized under the DENEMA project (Development of Markets for Telematics Products in Central Asia), a support action of the EU's Telematics Applications programme, and will be coordinated by UNESCO.

The aim of the conference is to promote new market opportunities in Central Asia for telematics-based products and services for education, healthcare and commerce.

It will serve to formulate strategies for the development of distance education, electronic commerce and telemedicine in the Central Asian region. It will provide an opportunity for European telematics service-providers to meet high-level government ministers and officials, including top telecoms representatives and senior management from Central Asian companies. Individual discussions on joint ventures between Central Asian and European organizations will also be encouraged.

Presentations from Central Asian participants will provide insight into these governments' position on telematics infrastructure. Current use of new technologies for education, healthcare, finance and trade will be demonstrated, and practical conclusions drawn from the two East-West workshops on electronic commerce (Tashkent, March 1998) and distance education (Bishkek, May 1998) will be presented. Presentations from the European participants will cover products and services in areas such as telematics-based distance learning, tele-medecine and electronic commerce.
