The Networked and Electronic Media Industrial Initiative (NEM Initiative) - public launching workshop
A NEM vision has been developed and will be widely discussed with all constituencies in the NEM sector. The acting proponents of the NEM Initiative have concluded that this sector is sufficiently important for Europe (in terms of industrial, business and societal impacts) that requires full attention in the preparation of a long term research agenda, including the Framework Programme 7. The vision of the NEM Initiative has been supported by the previous work carried out within the New Media Council group of the Networked Audiovisual Systems and Home Platforms strategic objective of the FP6. The core group of launching Entities of the NEM Initiative includes ALCATEL, EBU, EURESCOM, FRANCE TELECOM, INTEL, NOKIA, PHILIPS, ROSE, TELEFONICA, THOMSON and HOMEGA RESEARCH.
The NEM Initiative focuses on the development of new multimedia services and applications oriented to serve to the users and workers through the research and development of new content technologies, new delivery technologies, integration of existing content and delivery technologies, seamless use of delivery networks, assuming an evolutionary framework from current home and office towards broadband extended home and office environments. In this vision, NEM assumes the challenges, risks and opportunities derived from the convergence of the audiovisual technologies (content, processing, delivery and presentation), the broadband technologies and networks, the consumer and professional equipment for multimedia applications and services. It will allow EU industry and sector actors to completely master the required technologies of the value chain, to develop a consensus on the required standards, to promote international co-operation and at the same time matching the overall regulatory process with the power and range of the new technologies and services.
