The second European conference on research and advanced technology for digital libraries will be held in Crete, Greece, from 19 to 23 September 1998. The conference will be funded under the EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers programme (TMR) and will be organized in conjunction with the seventh DELOS workshop on electronic commerce.

The objective of the conference is to provide a forum for researchers from multiple disciplines whose science relates to the development of digital libraries. This will give researchers the opportunity to discuss issues and strategies specific to the European context, as well as providing an opportunity to review and discuss international research on digital libraries.

The conference should serve to identify key problems which must be solved to make digital libraries an effective reality. The discussions should also contribute to the definition of digital library parameters which influence issues such as access, retrieval and interaction of information. In addition, the conference should help to identify general structures and frameworks for integrating research and to direct future research in this area.

The workshop on electronic commerce aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss and understand pressing issues in electronic commerce and the economics of digital information systems. The key topics for discussion include:

- Middleware architectures for electronic commerce;
- Security, authentication and registration;
- Pricing models and charging frameworks;
- Specifications for services and interoperability.
