The second European conference on accounting theories and practices will be held in Cork, Ireland, from 25 to 29 September 1998. The conference, entitled "Managerial accounting in Europe: engaging research and practice" will be organized by the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management, with support from the EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers programme (TMR).

The objectives of the conference include improving communication between young researchers and established academics, and encouraging younger students to publicize their research results. Contributions are welcome from young doctoral and post-doctoral students with a research interest in accounting theories and practices.

Prospective participants are invited to join one of the research groups, which were divided into thematic areas during the first conference. The themes of these research groups are:

- Shifting paradigms in accounting for the public services;
- Design and use of performance measures in the manufacturing industry in Europe;
- Narrative approaches to accounting research;
- Markets for accounting knowledge;
- Education of controllers in Europe;
- Accounting in the knowledge economy.
