An international conference on EU accession and regional development will be held in Tartu, Estonia, from 14 to 16 June 1998. The conference will be organized under the EU's PHARE regional development support programme in Estonia, with input from the Estonian government and the Foundation for Regional Development.

The aim of the conference is to exchange experiences with other accession countries on preparations for EU membership in the field of regional development, as well as to present and discuss new regional development strategies and policies in Central and Eastern Europe. In addition, the conference will serve to introduce European officials, experts and practitioners to Estonia and its regional development strategy.

Four separate sessions will present the following topics:

- Towards EU membership;
- Preparing for the future in Estonia;
- Overview of regional development in neighbouring Baltic states;
- Progress on EU pre-accession: Experiences from Central Europe.
