European Membrane Protein Consortium - Industrial Workshop
In attempts to improve the success rate in structure determination on membrane proteins, the EU-funded E-MeP consortium has been established. Currently, 18 European laboratories are partners of the network, with a number of additional associate member laboratories. E-MeP is exploring several expression systems (E. coli, Lactococcus lactis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Pichia pastoris, baculovirus, Semliki Forest virus and cellfree translation) on 100 prokaryotic and 200 eukaryotic membrane proteins. Our preliminary goal is to develop novel technologies to facilitate the purification and crystallization of membrane proteins. We expect to solve a number of high resolution structures on selected targets within the 5 years of the project.
As the targets include G protein-coupled receptors, ion channels, transporters and other integral membrane proteins we believe that they present a major interest for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Membrane proteins are targets for drug development in many areas such as cancer, cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, neurodegenerative, psychiatric and infectious diseases.
We are now organizing an industrial workshop, where we would like to establish interaction with industry. For this reason, we will organize a two-day Industrial Workshop. This meeting will contain scientific presentations on topics such as recombinant protein expression, refolding and solubilization methods and purification and crystallization of membrane proteins by well known speakers in the field. Needless to say, the E-MeP project will also be presented. Moreover, a Panel Discussion on Industrial Needs will take place.
The programme, the registration forms, an introduction text to this workshop and the details on the location can be downloaded on: http://www.e-mep.org/(opens in new window)
