The Community of Mediterranean Universities' (CUM) fourth annual course, on "Technologies for preservation and conservation of fortifications in the Mediterranean basin", will be held in Rhodes, Greece, from 25 to 31 May 1998. The course is supported by the European Commission (DG XII), under the EU's Environment and Climate RTD programme.

The course programme will consist of a series of lectures, given by experts in conservation, combined with case study visits, focused on structural and scientific aspects of fortifications, as follows:

- Materials and weathering processes;
- Technologies for conservative intervention on the basis of the historical background, including stability aspects;
- Preservation, maintenance and management of fortifications;
- Case studies (Greece, Italy, Egypt, etc.).

During the course scientific visits are planned to ancient fortifications and defensive walling, where the technologies employed for their preservation and conservation will be presented.
