The Convention of National Societies of Electrical Engineers (EUREL) of Europe will organize a conference on mobile robotics, in Leiria, Portugal, from 9 to 11 September 1998. The event will be supported by the EU under the Euroconferences initiative of the Training and Mobility of Researchers programme, and will be the first in a series of three conferences.

The conference has been designed to bring together researchers from across Europe, to increase scientific and technical interaction in the field of mobile robotics, with the ultimate objective of stimulating research on a pan-European scale. The event will have a strong international dimension, and will include addresses from representatives of the European institutions on opportunities for further international cooperation.

The topics to be covered during the conference will come under the broad framework of mobile robotics and will include:

- Systems architecture and artificial intelligence concepts;
- Sensor technologies;
- Navigation;
- Actuation systems;
- Advanced industrial applications;
- International cooperation.

The workshop is aimed at engineers and scientists, in particular young researchers, working in industry, academia and research institutions, who wish to contribute to the field of robotics within a European framework.
