A European workshop on technologies for environmental emergencies will be held in Rome, Italy, on 19 June 1998. The aim of the workshop, organized by local innovation agencies, is to present the results of the "Not Only Wildfires" (NOW) initiative, funded by the EU's Information Technologies (ESPRIT) research programme. This measure has led to the selection of 22 Environmental Emergency Decision Support Systems (EDSS) resulting from projects funded by the EU's ESPRIT, Environment and Climate, and Telematics Applications research programmes.

The workshop will open with a presentation from a representative of the European Commission on opportunities for information technologies research under the planned Fifth RTD Framework Programme. This will be followed by a presentation from public administrators and policy-makers who will highlight the environmental problems and technological expectations of various European regions, such as Tuscany in Italy and Provence in France.

The second session will be devoted to a presentation of selected EDSS technologies from the NOW and G7 inventory, as possible technological solutions to the following emergencies:

- Wild fires;
- Oil spills;
- Nuclear emergency;
- Industrial risks.

During the workshop a Working Group on EDSS Technologies and Environmental/Industrial emergencies will be presented and launched, and its medium-term action plan will be outlined by its main promoters.
