More than TV on a mobile phone - DAIDALOS workshop on mobile-broadcast convergence
At the workshop, DAIDALOS partners will present their technical results on mobile-broadcast convergence. The aim of DAIDALOS is to fundamentally improve the usability of European telecommunication technologies by integrating mobile network and broadcast communications in order to deliver personalised and pervasive end-to-end services across heterogeneous technologies. The project explored the feasibility of these services in two user scenarios: the DAIDALOS Mobile University scenario and the DAIDALOS Automobile scenario. DAIDALOS has developed a network architecture which enables the seamless use of a personalised communication service, like e-mail or digital video, while moving from fixed-line internet at home or in the office to mobile broadcasting via DVB-T in a car.
In the opening keynote, Dr. Klaus Illgner from Institut für Rundfunktechnik will outline the status of DVB-H development. The work of IETF on DVB will be explained in a second keynote by Dr. Bernhard Collini-Nocker, Paris Lodron University Salzburg, IETF IPDVB WG. In the third keynote, Dr. Demosthenes Ikonomou, Scientific Officer at the European Commission, will present the EU's view on the question, if mobile broadcasting is just TV or provides new services.
A panel of high-level experts will discuss "What will drive convergence?" and how technical trends go together with business logic in the creation of value. The panel participants are Dr. Klaus Illgner, Institut für Rundfunktechnik, Prof. Karl Jonas, Fraunhofer, Simos Menexis, OTEplus, Dr. Bernhard Collini-Nocker, Paris Lodron University Salzburg, IETF IPDVB WG. The panel discussion is moderated by Prof. Rui Aguiar, Instituto de Telecomunicaçòes Aveiro.
About DAIDALOS
DAIDALOS is an Integrated Project under EU Framework Programme 6 for Research and Development in the Thematic Priority 'Information Society Technologies'. The project is dedicated to the design of advanced network infrastructures and access technologies for location-independent, personalised communication services. The main objective of DAIDALOS is to develop a future network architecture for systems beyond 3G, based on Mobile IPv6.
47 partners from industry and academia are involved in the project, which started in 2003 and has a duration of 2.5 years. The project budget of DAIDALOS amounts to € 25.7 million, € 14.7 million of which is funded by the European Commission.
