The Organization for Intelligent Transport Systems in Europe (ERTICO) will hold a forum entitled "Planning intelligent transport solutions for Europe's cities", in Stockholm, Sweden, on 7 and 8 September 1998. The aim of the forum is to address the challenge of making the best choice of tools for urban issues such as transport. The forum will be of interest to city officials and European, national and regional policy-makers, as well as industrialists and senior business leaders, senior transport leaders and finance executives.

A highlight of the forum will be the presentation of a new approach and guidelines developed for identifying and implementing urban Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). This approach, developed by ITS City Pioneers, an initiative of ERTICO and its partners, comprises the "ITS Toolbox" and the "ITS Planning Handbook".

The topics to be covered during the plenary sessions of the forum include:

- EU policy for ITS in cities;
- European-level strategies for cities;
- Member States' policies for ITS in cities;
- Partnerships for ITS deployment;
- Challenges for ITS deployment in cities: European case study;
- Experience of a US city in early deployment planning;
- ITS City Pioneers approach to ITS planning.

A number of seminars will address related issues such as tools, applications, funding and partnerships. Case studies on city success stories will be presented and a round table will discuss collaborative action for a new approach. The forum will finish with a number of technical visits to locations in Stockholm such as the Traffic Management Centre.
