The European Commission and the United Kingdom Presidency of the Council of the EU, will organize a round table on the future of biotechnology, to be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 25 June 1998.

The round table will be opened by the European Industry Commissioner, Dr. Martin Bangemann and the UK Minister for Science, Energy and Industry, Mr. John Battle.

The event will comprise four sessions which will cover the following:

- Benchmarking European biotechnology, in the context of measures being taken in the private and public sectors to take European biotechnology forward and to promote increased competitiveness;
- Communication and dialogue, focusing on some of the benefits and needs to encourage continuing future contacts between interest groups;
- Regulatory transparency and efficiency to consider what the stakeholders want from future regulation;
- Ethics in biotechnology, in the context of a European level response to ethical issues to which future developments in biotechnology may give rise.
