A European conference on industrial energy efficiency will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 8 to 10 July 1998. The conference will be organized within the framework of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU, in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, and will be sponsored by the European Commission under the SAVE programme for the promotion of energy efficiency in the EU.

The conference is organized around evidence of cost-effective energy saving potential throughout all branches of industry, from good energy management to investments in new, highly efficient technologies. The aim of the conference is to provide a high-level forum for the international exchange of information and ideas on the benefits of energy efficiency for industrial energy users.

Key features of the conference will include the presentation of more than 25 companies and how they improved their energy efficiency. These companies will be representative of a wide variety of industry and will include both SMEs and larger firms. In addition, a series of innovative programmes and initiatives supporting companies in their efforts to increase energy efficiency will also be presented. This will cover Long Term Agreements, energy and the environment topics such as EMAS accreditation, and issues covering the availability of training and education for companies.

Other topics to be covered in plenary sessions include:

- Success for energy efficiency in European industry;
- Why energy efficiency is more than just a technical question: Lessons from European SMEs;
- Economics of energy efficiency;
- Reaching the Kyoto targets: strategies and roles for industry.
