The fifth European Earth Observation System (EEOS) meeting will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, on 15 and 16 October 1998. The meeting is being jointly organized by the European Space Agency, the Remote Sensing Society, the British National Space Centre and the Commission's Centre for Earth Observation programme.

This meeting continues a series of technical workshops in the field of earth observation. The theme "Data access - from archive to real-time" has been selected to reflect the growing concern in Europe for the long-term preservation of satellite data from the last three decades. Preservation of this data, as well as improved access to the information available, is the main issue to be discussed during the meeting.

The topics to be discussed will include:

- Developing ISO archiving standards;
- Interoperability and common searching methods;
- Archive utilization and data mining;
- Real-time access to archived data;
- Archiving policy and long-term archive preservation issues;
- The case for a European role in the long-term preservation of earth observation data.
