The second international conference on "Crossroads in cultural studies" will be held in Tampere, Finland, from 28 June to 1 July 1998. The theme of this year's conference will be "Rhetoric and politics of the Information Society", which will be further developed during the fourteenth World Congress of Sociology, to be held in Montreal, Canada, from 26 July to 1 August 1998.

The aim of the conference is to examine how the Information Society is socially constructed or conceptualized, and how these concepts are related to different theoretical, practical or political contexts.

The conference will be divided into four sessions, addressing the following:

- Conceptual issues relating to rhetoric and politics of the Information Society;
- A case study of Finland, examining issues such as Information Society policy and local management of the Information Society;
- Case studies on other countries, including Singapore, Austria, Greenland and Denmark;
- Democracy, gender and minority issues in the Information Society.
