International Symposium Chinese Villages and their Sustainable Future
After presentations at the final SUCCESS Conference in Beijing at the China Agricultural University – CAU and in Shanghai at the Shanghai Academy for Social Sciences – SASS in April 2005 this conference serves within an international and interdisciplinary context to present and discuss these cognitions also in Austria and so in Europe.
The situation in China is currently characterized by a disproportionate focus on the development in towns and cities and until now a neglected situation in the rural areas, where yet still 70 % of the Chinese population are living. These facts show the need for interdisciplinary research, co-operations related to practice and exchange with the concerned people to manage the manifold imbalances between urban and rural areas sustainably. Comprehensive concepts and programs will contribute to valorisation of rural areas as qualitative living spaces and rural live should be recognized and esteemed in future as complement to urban lifestyles by the Chinese society. Within the three years of SUCCESS research these approaches have been followed under the principle of sustainability and the research questions [what to maintain] and [what to change].
Selected experts from the different SUCCESS project modules (ecology, economy, socio-culture and built environment) will present their findings and conclusions for sustainable movements emanated from their investigations in 7 Chinese villages. The scientific exchange with Austrian/European experts with long experiences and good achievements in rural development appears highly interesting and also fruitful for further research and scientific co-operations in this field.
