A course/conference on "Services and information in a global society" will be held in Madrid, Spain, from 13 to 17 July 1998. The event will be opened by Mr. Marcelino Oreja, European Commissioner responsible for audiovisual and information policy, and will also include a presentation from Mr. Jorg Wenzel of the EU's Information Society Project Office (ISPO), entitled "EU communications policies as a support to development".

The aim of this event is to cover topics that are considered to be key aspects in the development of society in the next millennium and to give a global vision of the changes in society as a consequence of technological development. It is directed at professionals and people from the academic world who want to learn of the opportunities and consequences of this new way of understanding communication and the rendering of services.

Topics to be covered during the conference include:

- The added value of communication: AVC, a new system to create and measure value;
- Information as an asset and competitive advantage;
- Towards a new concept in information and communication;
- Virtual financial services: Key factors;
- The future of new commercial systems;
- New technologies and the academic world;
- Telecommunications and information as instruments to create employment: the Irish case;
- Liberalization strategies in the telecommunications sector;
- Corporate communication services via the Network.
