The 28th in the series of Blue Seminars, organized by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, on "Aquatic Processes and Water Technology" will be held in Ispra, Italy, on 12 June 1998. The seminar will be lead by Professor Nikolaos Nikolaidis of the University of Connecticut, a specialist in the field of arsenic contamination.

Arsenic contamination of water supplies around the world is a particularly acute problem in places such as West Bengal in India, Mongolia, Thailand, Chile, Taiwan and Mexico. In most cases the arsenic is naturally occurring, and is the product of dissolution of arsenopryitic minerals. There is therefore an urgent need to develop assessment methods and remediation technologies to address this problem. The aim of this seminar is to discuss new work carried out in this field.

Recent work conducted on arsenic assessment and remediation at the University of Connecticut, USA, will be presented during the seminar. This work involved a site in Maine, which had arsenic contamination from the town landfill which was built on an abandoned gravel pit. The experiments carried out on this site provided an understanding of the processes that control arsenic mobility in the subsurface. A new Arsenic Remediation Technology, developed at the University and tested at the site in Maine will also be presented.
