The seventeenth international conference on offshore mechanics and Arctic engineering will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 5 to 9 July 1998. The conference will receive funding from the European Commission, under the Industrial and Materials Technologies research programme (BRITE/EURAM).

The main objective of the conference is to provide a forum for the exchange of information on the most recent developments in offshore technology and Arctic engineering, achieved by industry and academia at the scientific, technological and exploitation levels. The meeting also aims to promote awareness between scientists and experts of new practices and advances.

The conference will comprise five symposia covering the following areas of interest:

- Offshore technology;
- Safety and reliability;
- Materials;
- Pipeline technology;
- Ocean space utilization.
