A European workshop on optical fibre sensors will be held in Peebles, United Kingdom, from 8 to 10 July 1998. The workshop is organized by the University of Strathclyde and will receive funding from the European Commission, within the Industrial and Materials Technologies research programme (BRITE/EURAM).

The aim of the workshop is to stimulate interaction between the research and applications communities, in order to develop partnerships and foster new research. Other aims include the furthering of technical progress in optical fibre sensor technologies, and facilitating structured discussions in order to create new ideas bringing together technical progress and applications opportunities.

The workshop will comprise presentations from leading authorities in both applications and technologies, and contributions from funding authorities and R&D planning communities. These will cover technology and applications of optical fibre sensors, in the broadest sense, including signal processing, data analysis and interpretation and the impact of thermal, mechanical, biological and chemical environments on system performance.
