A conference entitled "Materials in the oceanic environment" will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 22 to 24 July 1998. The conference will receive funding from the European Commission, within the Industrial and Materials Technologies research programme (BRITE/EURAM).

Understanding and predicting the behaviour of materials used in systems in the marine environment is essential. The aim of the conference, is therefore to provide a forum for discussion on recent developments related to all aspects of materials, covering safety and risk aspects, reliability and lifetime of equipment, as well as issues such as pollution reduction and marine resources.

The topics to be covered during the conference, are:

- The behaviour of systems and their structures;
- The behaviour of materials and protection mechanisms;
- Materials characterization, and testing and selection;
-The influence of manufacturing processes on materials behaviour;
- The oceans as a source of materials;
- Recycling and disposal of waste materials;
- Case studies.
