A European thermal plasma processes congress will take place in St Petersburg, Russia, from 13 to 16 July 1998. The event is being organized by the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris IV) and will receive support from the EU under the Industrial Materials and Technologies research programme.

East-West exchanges in the thermal plasmas sector are vital for the EU, given that Russian scientists have played a decisive role in the development of thermal plasma sources and applications for many years. The sector has a bearing on a number of different state-of-the-art technologies in materials, such as ceramics, ultra-thin materials, metallurgy and surface treatments, as well as power sources (up to 1 MW) and their control.

The congress will address two major topics:

- Treatment of highly toxic waste using plasma (to be complemented by site visits);
- Photovoltaic materials produced from plasma.

The congress will contribute to the work of the European company High Temperature Material Processes, which uses plasma technologies in the manufacture and treatment of materials. It will also contribute to the establishment of a European network on Plasma Waste Treatments, including both industry and agencies responsible for waste treatment.
