The 12th World AIDS Conference takes place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 28 June to 3 July 1998. This annual event is the world's leading forum for information on basic and clinical science, treatment and prevention, caring, and education in respect of HIV and AIDS, and is expected to be attended by some 12,000 people.

The conference will feature a range of topics, with the overriding aim to encourage and strengthen links between scientists, the community, industry and government. This year, for the first time, both scientific and HIV community representatives have had an equal say in drawing up the conference programme.

The main theme will be "Bridging the gap" between the established market economies in the "North" and the developing countries in the "South". Whilst 90% of those infected live in the South, it is only in the North where there is real hope of treatment. With the conference focusing on scientific and cultural advances, the aim will be to make these relevant to the vast majority of those infected.

Major topics to be addressed in plenary sessions will include:

- Prevention;
- From pathogenesis to pandemic;
- Treatment: Efficacy and access;
- Consequences of an evolving pandemic.

The European Union has supported research on AIDS since 1983, two years after the first diagnosis. The current BIOMED programme (1994-1998) has funded 58 projects on infectious diseases, with emphasis on those caused by HIV, to the total of ECU 32 million. When the new Fifth Framework Programme comes on-stream, a Key Action will be dedicated to the "Control of viral and other infectious diseases". Again this action will fund research on AIDS as a priority, in particular supporting the search for a vaccine.

The EU has also supported HIV research and other cooperative activities with third countries, not least developing countries in the South and the Central and Eastern European countries. The AIDS prevention programme supports the monitoring and surveillance of AIDS/HIV, as well as promoting education and prevention. The EU is also active in standardization and drug certification fields.
