SunDay'98, an annual event held close to the summer solstice, will take place this year on 21 June 1998. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of renewable energy through locally organized events held throughout Europe. The event is supported by the European Commission within the framework of the ALTENER programme for the promotion of renewable energy sources in the Community.

SunDay'98 aims to promote the potential of renewable energy in three ways:

- By showcasing renewable energy programmes and projects;
- By educating the public, media and decision-makers;
- By encouraging new initiatives in renewable energy.

The event is managed by the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) and an overall coordinator will provide general management and act as central contact and press office for all events. National offices of the ISES will coordinate and provide support for events in their country, however all events are locally based and organized.

Examples of SunDay events organized for 1998 include:

- In Tyrol, Austria, there will be an excursion to a large solar energy system and a multi-media show;
- In Sofia, Bulgaria, there will be a design exhibition, which will include presentations on developing and promoting creativity and technological advances in the use of renewable energies;
- In Italy, Greenpeace will launch their initiative on solar thermal power prepared in collaboration with Assolterm;
- In Bucharest, Romania, the Romanian Solar Energy Society will be organizing a design exhibition for children on renewable energy.
