A workshop on European science and technology will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 16 to 19 September 1998. The workshop, which is sponsored by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Transport, is organized by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Comparative Research in Social Sciences.

The aim of the workshop is to address the discrepancy between high qualitative and quantitative levels of European research and development, and low levels of European innovative output in comparison to countries such as Japan and the USA. Presentations during the workshop from European, Japanese and American experts on this problem will also discuss strategies for improving innovation systems in Europe.

The main session will focus on Europe and will be chaired by a representative of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. Other presentations from Commission representatives will cover strategies and coordination for science, research and development, research, innovation and the Information Society, and EU-funded socio-economic research.
