Democratic consolidation: the international dimension
The principal aim of the conference is to promote the understanding on a conceptual, theoretical and empirical level of the means and channels of external influence on the consolidation of democracies and the actors involved in the process. The role of international influence for the development of democracy will be assessed from three central spheres of democratic regimes, namely constitution-making, political parties and party systems and civil society.
The opening session of the conference will be devoted to conceptual and theoretical questions, such as:
- Can the domestic level of democratization be conceptualized in isolation from the international one?
- Which forms and means of international influence on democratic transitions and consolidations can be distinguished?
- Which kinds of actors are involved in the process of international influence on democratization, and how can they be classified in view of the roles they play?
- On which institutional spheres of democracy do international factors have the most influence and why?
