The Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, in cooperation with the European Commission, will organize a conference and exhibition entitled "Cultural heritage in the global village", to be held in Vienna, Austria, from 5 to 11 October 1998. One of the key features of the event will be a conference of European museum directors, who will discuss the theme "Museums in communication" organized by the European Commission, DG X.

The event will also feature the presentation of the MEDICI framework of cooperation on Multimedia for Education and Employment through an Integrated Cultural Initiative. The MEDICI framework was launched by DG XIII, in cooperation with DG X, and will maintain an open framework of cooperation for cultural heritage holders, industry and other players involved in the development of multimedia technologies, products and services.

The aim of the event is provide a focal point for all the relevant stakeholders in the field of cultural artefact digitisation. This is in order to initiate new and more comprehensive cooperation projects, between museums, libraries and archives on the one hand and mediators, content providers, political decision-makers, industries and developers on the other hand.

The event will comprise a symposium and exhibition. The topics to be covered during the symposium will include the following:

- Culture of the past - Culture of the future;
- Computers and our new perspectives on culture;
- Museums in communication;
- Multimedia and cultural heritage;
- The MEDICI framework;
- European Commission programmes and actions for multimedia and cultural heritage;
- Cultural heritage, multimedia and tourism;
- The museum of the 21st century.

The exhibition will explore the theme of the museum of the future and how multimedia applications will change access to the cultural heritage of the world. The exhibition will feature the following:

- Software for professional pictorial archives;
- Digitisation workshop;
- CD-ROMs;
- The electronic classroom;
- Museum information and signage systems;
- Funding institutions and programmes.
