The International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID) will hold its 49th annual conference in New Delhi, India, from 11 to 17 October 1998. The conference will address the theme "Towards the new Information Society of tomorrow: innovations, challenges and impacts."

The move towards an information centred society calls for innovations in the generation, collection, storage, processing and dissemination of information and knowledge. This presents new challenges and opportunities for those involved in the management of information centres, systems and services which will require innovative technical solutions.

Against this background, the conference will address four main areas of discussion, which are likely to be held as parallel sessions:

- Research, technology and education;
- Modelling, analysis and systems;
- Economic, societal, ethical and cultural issues;
- Policies, regulations, laws and copyright.
