The 32nd ESLAB symposium will be held in the European Space Research and Technology Centre in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, from 15 to 18 September 1998. Organized by the European Space Agency, it will address the theme "Remote sensing methodology for earth observation and planetary exploration".

The symposium will discuss the need to conduct space programmes more efficiently, with shorter development schedules, more standardized interfaces and the reuse of standard sub-systems and instruments in order to cope with decreasing budgets. The issue of Europe's deficit in space instrument pre-development, and the fact that appropriate resources are usually made available only after instruments are selected for space missions, will also be addressed.

The main goals of the symposium are to:

- Review the status of remote sensing methodology in earth observation and planetary exploration;
- Review the status and trends in detector and instrument development;
- Present future developments and requirements in earth observation and planetary exploration;
- Discuss a strategy for pre-development of key instrumentation that will meet the requirements of the new cost-effective approaches in mission implementation;
- Examine issues related to the competitiveness of European research institutions and industry and the participation in future international space enterprises.
