The eleventh international symposium on glass research will be held in Sheffield, United Kingdom, from 6 to 10 September 1998, supported by the European Commission under the specific RTD programme in the field of Industrial and Materials Technologies (BRITE-EURAM). The aim of the symposium is to provide a forum for discussions on the latest progress in synthesis, properties, processing and applications for non-oxide and new optical glasses.

The target participants of the symposium will include the leading scientists, technologists and industrialists in the glass industry. Young researchers are particularly encouraged to attend and there will be a symposium prize for outstanding scientific contribution to the field.

An important objective of the event is to bridge the gap between scientific understanding and industrial applications, so that the potential of special glasses, particularly for innovative photonic materials technologies, is realised more effectively.

The topics to be covered during the symposium will include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Novel glasses and glass systems;
- Glass synthesis, including vapour deposition and melting;
- Glass processing, including fabrication of fibres and planar waveguides;
- Glass structure, including solid-state nuclear magnetic spectroscopy and neutron scattering;
- Glass properties, including thermal properties, thermal expansion and stress relaxation;
- Electronic properties such as semiconducting properties of chalcogenide-based glasses;
- Optical properties, both linear and non-linear;
- New directions and applications.
