A two-day conference on EU noise policy will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 7 and 8 September 1998. It will be organized by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency in cooperation with the European Commission, DG XI. The conference will be opened by European Environment Commissioner, Mrs. Ritt Bjerregaard.

The main objective of the conference is to provide a forum for discussions on noise policy, with particular reference to the framework Directive for environmental noise for which the Commission plans to publish a proposal early in 1999. The conference will therefore provide all interested parties an opportunity to express their views on the forthcoming legislation.

The following topics will be presented during the conference:

- Ambient noise as one of the main environmental challenges, and Danish abatement efforts;
- The EU's new noise policy and its relevance to our urban environment;
- Traffic noise reduction in Copenhagen - an urban perspective;
- Towards operational information to support noise policy in the EU;
- Points of view from citizens and the cities on noise abatement and priorities;
- Organization of future noise policy;
- Preliminary work on indicators.
