The 50th anniversary of the Institute for Experimental Pathology at Keldur will be marked by a symposium on prions and lentiviral diseases, to be held in Reykjavik, Iceland, from 20 to 22 August 1998. The aim of this workshop is to bring together scientists working in the field, to discuss recent developments and the challenges involved.

The main emphasis will be on the unconventional, infectious agent, prion, and on important tools to elucidate its nature, strain variation and species barrier. The symposium will also discuss AIDS, the lentiviral disease in humans, and the fact that despite ongoing research for more than ten years, it remains one of the most serious health problems in the world. Important aspects such as pathogenesis, therapy, vaccination and animal models will also be discussed.

The following topics will be covered in detail:

- Prions and lentiviral diseases;
- Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies: prions, a common denominator;
- Lessons from transgenic mouse models;
- Strain variation and species barrier;
- Pathogenesis of HIV infection;
- HIV therapy, new aspects;
- Prospects for the control of lentiviral infection by vaccination;
- Lessons from research on maedi/visna virus infection.
