Second Understand project Conference “Learning from regional benchmarking to make i2010 a reality in the Regions”

The UNDERSTAND project –European Regions UNDER way towards STANDard indicators for benchmarking the Information Society-, started in 2004, is organising its second international
conference in Brussels, on March 30th 2006.
UNDERSTAND is an initiative for benchmarking regional Information Society deployment. Cofunded within the INTERREG IIIc programme, 12 EU regions from 7 countries (Emilia-Romagna -project leader-,
Aquitaine, Apulia, Baleares, Hessen, Piedmont, Tuscany, Valencia, Vasternorrland, Wales, Wielkopolska,Yorkshire) joined together to agree a common methodology and select a set of omparable indicators.
Following to the methodology definition and publication and as a results of two rounds of surveys on four domains (social infrastructure, broadband, e-government, e-business), the project is now focusing on benchlearning.
The conference “LEARNING FROM REGIONAL BENCHMARKING TO MAKE i2010 A REALITY IN THE REGIONS DATA ANALYSIS, IMPACTS ON ICT POLICIES, EMERGING NEEDS”, aimed at the dissemination of the second year project results with a special focus on their impacts on policy making, will be sponsored and hosted by the COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS.
The event will also be an occasion to discuss more in general how regions can contribute to the achievement of the i2010! goals. The contribution of other benchmarking initiatives, such as BENTLI, SOURIR, BIRRA,will help highlighting the relevance and the potentiality of the benchmarking exercise. This is the output that
the participating regions will share with the IANIS+ network.
The conference is structured in two main sessions. The first will picture the status/progress in theInformation Society deployment as it comes out from the UNDERSTAND and the other benchmarking exercises. The second one will present how benchmarking can improve policy making in the regions to tackle the challenge towards i2010!, dealing with what regions have learnt and implement into policy from
benchmarking excises. This latter session will see the full involvement of regional policy makers and managers and would prepare the ground for the project follow up.
The conference is targeted to Regions;Development Agency; Research centres working on ICT, Public
administrations, regional development,statistics; Local administration; national and European statistical offices, EC officers working on Information Society and Regional Development, Region network. Working languages: English, Italian, Spanish, Polish.
