Promotion of university spin-off companies

A workshop on the promotion of university spin-off companies will be held in Twente, The Netherlands, on 8 and 9 October 1998. The event is being organised within the framework of UNISPIN, a project supported by the EU's INNOVATION programme which aims to promote regional spin-off programmes to assist in the establishment of companies from universities, other higher education institutions and research laboratories.

The workshop aims to provide participants with the opportunity to learn about how successful spin-off schemes operate. It is intended to provide conceptual and practical information on:

- The UNISPIN generic spin-off model and other models;
- Testing the feasibility of a spin-off scheme;
- How to seek regional support and finance;
- The implementation of a spin-off scheme.

The UNISPIN programme is open to all institutions in the EU, including universities, colleges, local and regional authorities, regional development agencies, business and innovation centres, and chambers of commerce. Four workshops have already been organised in autumn 1997, at which a total of 114 participants from 15 countries were able to obtain information on the possibilities of setting up regional spin-off programmes.
