9 September 1998 - 9 September 1998
Belgium
The seventh European symposium on suicide and suicidal behaviour will be held in Gent, Belgium, from 9 to 12 September 1998. This will provide a platform for researchers in the field of suicidology in order to integrate current research and stimulate more collaborative research at European level. The symposium also aims to bridge the gap between research, policy-making, the development of preventive strategies at local, national and European levels and daily clinical practice.

The specific aims will be to:

- Raise the level of awareness of suicide-related problems among public authorities, in order to stimulate the development of adequate policies;
- Review the current status of suicide-related research;
- Provide a platform for communication between researchers and individuals involved in the daily practice of suicide prevention.

The morning sessions of the conference will cover the central themes of the symposium, including the epidemiological, biological, psychological and psychiatric characteristics of the suicidal process. Gender differences in social and clinical aspects of suicidal behaviour and the implications for psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment will also be discussed.

The afternoon sessions will be dedicated to symposia covering topics such as national prevention strategies, mass media effects, biological aspects, physical illness, treatment studies and the costs of the suicidal process.
