The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is organising an international conference on topical issues in nuclear radiation and radioactive waste safety, to be held in Vienna, Austria, from 31 August to 4 September 1998.

The objective of the conference is to foster the exchange of information on topical issues in nuclear radiation and radioactive waste safety. This is in order to consolidate an international consensus on the present status of these issues, the priorities for future work and the need to strengthen international cooperation. This should also cover recommendations for the future work of the IAEA.

The topics to addressed during the conference will discuss both the policy and technical aspects of each issue. These will be grouped into six main areas:

- Safety management;
- Backfitting, upgrading and modernisation of nuclear processing plants;
- Regulatory issues;
- Occupational radiation protection: trends and developments;
- Situations of chronic exposure to residual radioactive materials: decommissioning, rehabilitation and reclamation of land;
- Radiation safety in the far future: the issue of long-term waste disposal.
